INFORMATION
Joana Azevedo (b. 2001, Porto, Portugal) is a Portuguese-Brazilian artist based in London. Her interdisciplinary practice examines the body as a site where socio-cultural forces are materially inscribed and rehearsed. Working across sculpture, installation, sound, and text, she investigates the performativity of late-capitalist representational regimes, attending to processes of self-objectification, internalised surveillance, and embodied control.
Her sculptural works often position the body between organism and apparatus, exposing tensions between protection and submission, agency and containment. Through industrial materials and structural precision, she constructs forms that oscillate between vulnerability and defence.
Sound functions in her practice as both medium and conceptual framework: a non-visual register of power that exceeds representation and operates directly on the body. By foregrounding acoustic, spatial, and material relations, Azevedo considers how authority is sensed, internalised, and potentially resisted.
